The situation around the Coronavirus (COVID-19) has changed our community and the ADA, MDA, and Detroit district are continuing to share information to dental professional to promote public information. We applaud all in the dental community is working together for patient and staff safety.  There is a variety of information to health care professionals, small business owners, and the public (patients) coming across as we all work together for the best path to protect public health.  The Detroit District Dental Society will feature information to help the dental community.  Below our links to dental resources and information.

To Dental Professionals in the Detroit District Dental Society Area: 

The State of Michigan and all Public County Health Departments are updating information daily as they receive the vaccine for Covid-19. We are finding at this time all dental professionals who wish to receive the vaccine are having great success in scheduling and receiving the vaccine.  Do be persistencent and signup with your location health department area per their instructions.  They ask for patience as all parties work together to distribute this vaccine to health professionals and the public as soon as possible.  Information may change and we are working to update you as quickly as possible.

Monroe County – update January 9, 2021

The Monroe County Public Health Department has already distributed Covid Vaccines to dental professionals in Monroe County. Currently about 50% of all offices have been scheduled or receivd the vaccine. There is an internal list of all dental professionals to alert them when vaccine distribution is available. They are schedulilng new vaccine appointments as vaccine doses are available.  Dental offices will sign up for appointments with the Monroe County Health Department for themselves and their staff.

This sign-up will ask each dental location to identify a point person, dentist or office manager, to sign up their team for appointments. The actual distribution date depends on the amount of vaccine they are receiving in the upcoming weeks.

The key questions on the sign-up form:

  • Dentist name, the city where the State of Michigan Dental License is registered and current.
  • A point person for your dental team can be the dentist or an office manager with full email, address, and phone contact for this person. This person will receive the notification for appointment sign-up for the vaccine and can not share the sign-up information with any other person or organization. The point person will sign-up your dental team.
  • An estimate or approximation of the number of dental professionals your office anticipates to receive the vaccine at this time. Note if this number changes, that is okay – an estimate is all that is needed at this time.

The online form is being hosted by the Detroit District Dental Society, working cooperatively with the Monroe County Public Health Department to get information to dental teams as soon as possible. Those using the form do not have to be a member of the Michigan Dental Association to use the form.

Wayne County – is covered by two health departments.  The Detroit Public Health Department / City of Detroit and Wayne County Health Department.  We are working to communicate with both organizations.  The two organizations have different immunization plans.

PHASE 1A - Healthcare Practice Vaccination Request

  • A "Phase 1A Healthcare Practice" is defined as a professionally managed setting that is engaged in the delivery of healthcare services by paid and/or unpaid persons who have the potential for direct or indirect exposure to patients or infectious materials. This form is not intended for Long-Term Care facilities. This form is for dental professionals.
  • This request is for practices located in Wayne County, not including Detroit. Practices located in the city of Detroit should contact the Detroit Health Department.
  • Before submitting this form, please poll all employees to determine how many are actually being vaccinated. Once the form is submitted, you will be contacted by a health department representative for scheduling. We have been told this contact will be by email. Due to request volume, please allow up to three (3) business days to be contacted. If you did not receive an email in three days we encourage you to complete the online sign-up again and in the comment section identify you are a high priority dental professional who has not received an email about scheduling.

Notes:

•             Have one person from your team register your group.  If the contact person is not a licensed dentist, please identify the dentist's name in the comments section.

•             Important: On the first page of the online form, the practice's address is a city in Wayne County that is not in Detroit. Detroit facilities should go to the Detroit Public Health Department, and we will be sending out that information as soon as it is available.

•             The form asks for facility address, the contact person with all information for name, phone, email, total staff, and how many of the staff are willing to be vaccinated. 

Detroit Health Department - updated March 1, 2021

The Detroit Health Department (DHD) has taken down the previous submission page for vaccine sign up.  New requests should start at the link below.  You will receive a response from Lauren Payton, a Detroit Health Department staff member, to schedule your appointment at 100 Mack Ave, Detroit, MI 48201, within 48 hours of completing the survey.

Oakland County – update January 9, 2021 (information from Oakland County Dental Society, Karen Lawson, OCDS Business Manager / Dr. John Kamar, OCDS Executive Director)

Oakland County has updated their website and now has online sign-up and cell phone text sign-up to receive updates on setting vaccine appointments.  The vaccine appointment setting is still a phone call registration.  They are currently registering those in priority Group 1A, this does include dental professionals.

Oakland County, Michigan Government has updated their COVID-19 texting information.

To receive the Oakland County COVID-19 Vaccination Newsletter, register your email address at www.oaklandcountyvaccine.com or text OAKGOV COVID to 468311.

The Oakland County Public Health Department has identified that appointments are being made for Covid-19 vaccinations for dental professionals. We have been told by dentists who have been successful – it may take many phone calls to connect to a person who can set your appointment.

Call 1-800-848-5533, Nurse on-call line, and register your staff for receiving the vaccine.

  1. Dental hygienists, Dentists, and any office personal that interface with patients.
  2. Each person will need proof of dental licensure or paystubs to prove employment in the county.
  3. There may be lengthy waits on the phone, at least initially.
  4. As of this morning it was announced that Oakland County is out of vaccine and not setting new appointments.This can change hourly so you are encouraged to sign up for the announcement alerts and call frequently.
  5. Each staff member will need to speak to the schedule by phone directly. We have been told one person can schedule for their team.

Washtenaw County Public Health Department is vaccinating health professionals in group 1A, and have now started priority groups 2 and 3 within 1A. Dental professionals are receiving the vaccine this week.  If you are a 1A provider or group completed their survey. Washtenaw will use the information to contact you when you can be scheduled. Please do not complete the survey more than once.

Government Orders Public Safety Covid 19

On Friday, Oct. 2 the Michigan Supreme Court ruled that Gov. Gretchen Whitmer lacked the constitutional authority to extend the COVID-19 state of emergency or issue executive orders related to the state of emergency without approval by the Michigan Legislature. The immediate effect is no Executive Order after April 30th is enforceable.

Michigan Dental Association – MDA recognizes that today, March 20, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer released Executive Order 2020-17. This order bans all nonessential or elective dental procedures. This means every dentist in Michigan must not perform any nonessential or elective procedures. If you do, consequences could include an ethics violation, loss of your license and/or criminal charges. Please click the Executive Order 2020-17 (COVID-19) to read the text of the Executive Order. 

Dental Office returned to work May 29, 2020.  

MDA has organized a task force to develop guidance to assist members in reopening their offices when restrictions are lifted. This is a challenging situation that changes almost hourly. The MDA is committed to keeping you updated as information becomes available. The MDA’s COVID-19 landing page has been developed to keep members informed. American Dental Association - the ADA recommends dentists nationwide postpone elective procedures and to follow all state laws and regulations.  Concentrating on emergency dental care will allow us to care for our emergency patients and alleviate the burden that dental emergencies would place on hospital emergency departments.

Emergency or Non Emergency? ADA Offers Guidance for Determining Dental Procedures

In a statement issued on March 16, the American Dental Association (ADA) called upon dentists nationwide to postpone elective dental procedures for three weeks in order for dentistry to do its part to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. … The ADA recognizes that state governments and state dental associations may be best positioned to recommend to the dentists in their regions the amount of time to keep their offices closed to all but emergency care. This is a fluid situation, and those closest to the issue may best understand the local challenges being faced. …The ADA sent an email, on March 18, 2020 to members, with information that should be helpful in determining what is considered “emergency” versus “non emergency.” This guidance may change as the COVID-19 pandemic progresses, and dentists should use their professional judgment in determining a patient’s need for urgent or emergency care.
