Blessing in a Back Pack

Blessings In a Backpack is a “neighbor-helping-neighbor” program that is designed to help meet the nutritional needs of children and families. The Detroit Dental Society is sponsoring this 5K participation to bring funds to this program and work towards providing a dental oral health kit to the families that are served by the program.

Each week, volunteers, in cooperation with school officials, distribute backpacks filled with enough non-perishable food for the weekend (six meals) to “at-risk” students.  These students are participants in the government subsidized free or reduced fee hot lunch program. These students and families are still in need to receive assistant and meals during COVID-19 school shutdowns.  These programs to bring good to needed kids and encourage their education are still operating even if school is not "live" and in-person due to COVID-19.

The goal of the Blessings in a Backpack program is to keep these students from going hungry on the weekends and remove barriers to academic success.

You can still donate even if you are not walking or running in the 5K

Not able to attend the 5K and still want to donate to Blessing in a Back Pack to feed children in need. The national average of kids on the food service program is 61% in our area public schools.  Children need food to get the most out of education.
