Malta Medical and Dental Clinic

Volunteer Opportunities Open All Year

Malta Medical and Dental Clinic DetroitThe Malta Dental and Medical Clinic was started in 2006 when Bishop Gumbleton asked the Knights of Malta (who were serving lunch at St. Leo Soup Kitchen) to start a medical clinic. It soon became apparent that the need for dental care was great. So, Bob Cosgrove D.D.S. and Dan Scanlan D.D.S. with a few dentist friends, started volunteering. There have been more than 17,000 patient visits and currently there are more than fifteen dentists volunteering, weekly, monthly or quarterly. There is a need for more volunteers. The hours are Tuesday through Friday 9 am to 1 pm. The dental assistants are pre-dental students who are learning how to assist and run a clinic. There have been more than 100 pre-dental volunteers who have been accepted into dental school. The mentoring of potential dentists by seasoned dentists is very rewarding. The clinic partners with UDM Dental and Dental Hygiene School, Wayne State School of Medicine and Pharmacy. The clinic also has an Eye Clinic and provides free eye exams and glasses.

The clinic has moved to a new location and sees patients who are uninsured or underinsured. This includes the working poor, the elderly, Veterans and immigrants. The clinic uses a Medicaid Navigator to help people enroll into Medicaid.

If you have a patient that you need to refer or you would like to volunteer please call Nancy Harmon R.D.H, 313-942-5957, maltadentaldirector@gmail.com

Michigan Donated Dental Services (DDS) program!

We want to continue to be a dental resource for the disabled, elderly, and chronically ill. Recently our program was featured in the Lansing State Journal highlighting one of the many patient transformation stories our program has had the opportunity to coordinate: Lansing State Journal 2019 Article

We want to help more individuals just like this! Please continue to use us a resource and contact us with any questions. Volunteer dentists are available all across Michigan to provide donated treatment to those who qualify.  If you encounter someone who needs help restoring their smile, please refer to our website http://www.smilemichigan.com/Resources/Michigan-Donated-Dental-Services for eligibility guidelines and an application.

Our program has been in Michigan since 1995 and provides FREE dental services to help clear up infections, create smiles, and help patients eat and chew without pain.
